The 2007-08 football seasons has come and gone. The dream season of the New England Patriots ended in a Superbowl that, surprisingly enough, lived up to its hyperbole. The New England Patriots almost went all the way with a perfect 21-0 season, only to end up on the losing end of a remarkable loss to the New York Giants. Elli Manning came out from the shadow of his brother Patton and Tom Brady was left one game short of a perfect season in many respects. But, was the 2007-08 season one of the best NFL seasons or was it merely a reflection of how the intensity of media coverage and the inevitable physical limitations of players whip up a football fan base?
A video beginning
It was easy to see from the beginning of the 2007-08 football seasons that something interesting was coming for the 2007-08 season. Patriots coach Bill Belichick was certainly the first to know as he got “spy-gate” rolling with the video taping of opposing teams signal calling during games. Whether this enabled the Patriots to accomplish the task of breaking countless records during the season is pure conjecture but it certainly set up the season for great drama, with the Patriots pummeling all opponents and breaking the 1972 Miami Dolphins 16-0 regular season undefeated record.
Passing, receptions, total yards …
The NFL is very meticulous about keeping track of every possible statistic since the modern era of football started in the early 1960’s. A full software package is likely available to crunch all the numbers. In this era of football, however, it will be fairly obvious that the New England Patriots, and a large portion of the teams’ individuals, will be at the top of the record lists for some time to come. Tom Brady was a machine (this is not an exaggeration) in his execution during this past season and now holds more records then most could consider reasonable for one man. It is unfair to place a number on this mans potential record count because there are probably many records that the man broke on his way to the Superbowl that have yet to found. Add in Randy Moss and other remarkable record breakers and the Patriots MAY be a contender for the best team of all time.
Packers, Cowboys and Bears
The remarkable 2007-08 football season and seasons past cannot be put into perspective without mentioning the Green Bay Packers, the Dallas Cowboys and the Chicago Bears. The “Packers” simply for their dominance in past years, pre and post modern era, and their solid 2007-08 performance, the “Cowboys” for their consistent history and media distraction of Jessica Simpson and the “Bears for being the only other team to rack up an undefeated team record in some form.
Pursuit of perfection
NFL football is all about turning number crunching of team, personal and a host of other numbers into a literally living and breathing machine in motion. During the season this part or that is prone to breakage so the machine rarely works perfectly through an entire season. This is especially true when a part weighs 350lbs., can move like a gazelle and hit like a school bus moving at 60mph. Perfect rarely happens so when the best does show up its nice to see that it can get 99% toward perfect without being perfect.
